Frei/heit – Free\dom: Frankfurt – Philadelphia
Through the Sister Cities Transatlantic Youth Mural Exchange, a partnership with the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, the City of Frankfurt am Main, the U.S. Consulate General Frankfurt, and Stiftung Orte der deutschen Demokratiegeschichte (Foundation Places of German Democratic History), young community members from both cities learned about shared civic histories and democratic values. They traced the story of Henriette Zobel, a Frankfurt citizen and upstanding democrat who was wrongly sentenced during the 1848 revolutions, exploring concepts around freedom, civil courage, and vulnerable democracies. Co-designed with Frankfurt-based artist Case Maclaim, their ideas culminated into a monumental, two-part Youth-Designed Mural at the Frankfurt Adult Education Centre (Volkshochschule Frankfurt) that represents the shared fight for Frei/heit across the Atlantic.
